Every year, representatives of UN member states gather at the United Nations building in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set international standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide. Lobbyists, NGO representatives, and field practitioners concerned with women’s global status attend the UNCSW both to lobby the Commission about specific areas of interest, and to create networks to discuss specific issues pertaining to issues that face women around the world. The Recommendations issued by the Commission at the end of the two-week session are the single most important policy documents pertaining to women’s rights and advancement globally. This year, the Office of Faith-Based Service and Learning will offer selected students the opportunity to attend the NGO-hosted side events of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York City. Airfare, ground transportation, and lodging will be provided for the first week of the Commission, February 25-29.
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about women’s issues on a global scale. It’s also a great chance for any of you interested in working in fields related to international development or public policy to get a firsthand view of how development policy is made.
