During the month of March, The Marion-Perry County Public Library sponsored the Big Read in Perry County. The Big Read is a nationwide initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts which seeks to encourage communities to read and discuss classic pieces of literature. The book chosen to be read in our community was Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird.
Community events related to the book’s theme and setting were planned throughout the month of March. Judson students Brittany Jones, Kathleen Hamman, and Susanna Gaston were instrumental in the planning and implementation of these events, which were coordinated by librarian Tiffany Vaughn.
Two events were co-sponsored and hosted by the Office of Faith-Based Service and Learning. The first was an open lecture by noted Alabama historian and Auburn University Professor Emeritus Dr. Wayne Flynt, which was entitled "Globalizing Tolerance: How a Woman from Monroeville, Alabama, Teaches Tolerance Around the World." The second event hosted on Judson’s campus was a screening of the 1962 film adaptation of the novel.
Both events held on Judson's campus were well-attended, and the entire Big Read event was a huge success. Thank you to the staff and friends of the Marion-Perry County Public Library. We aprreciate the work that was required to bring this event to our community.
