"After shadowing Dr. Lee [a local physician] and seeing the prevalence of obesity and other preventable problems in the community, I wanted to do an event promoting healthy living and exercise. We discussed it with Dr. Wilson, our faculty advisor, who suggested that we do something that everyone, even the out of shape people could participate in - a walk, and suggested that we focus on diabetes. I was amazed that everyone I spoke to was either willing to help or gave a positive suggestion and words of encouragement.”

Tri-Beta sponsors community walk
Members of Judson’s Science Club and Beta Beta Beta, the national honor society for the biological sciences, organized a community-wide event designed to raise awareness of diabetes on Saturday, May 23. The walk began on the court house square and ended at the Marion Depot, with the Francis Marion High School drum corp leading the way. In spite of the wet weather, forty people came out to join the march to the Depot, where they found free diabetes and hypertension screening, children’s activities, and healthy snacks.
