Future social workers build relationships

Students enrolled in Introduction to Social Work participated in service learning project through partnership with Berean Baptist Head Start and Perry County Nursing Home. The five students enrolled in the course each “adopted” one child enrolled in Head Start and one resident of the Perry County Nursing Home. Administrators of the community agencies helped to identify the children and residents that would benefit the most from their inclusion in the project.

Students became aware of needs in the Marion community as a whole as they formed relationships with their adoptees and learned more about their lives. While forming these individual relationships throughout the course, students learned to adequately identify and discuss both apparent and less apparent needs of their adoptees. Students used service learning funds to purchase two Christmas gifts specially chosen for and needed by their adoptees. Judson students surprised their new friends with these gifts at the close of the semester. The project strengthened students’ awareness of societal needs and allowed them to experience social work practice through hands-on service while meeting a need in the community.
